“It is our duty to fight for our freedom. It is our duty to win. We must love each other and protect each other. We have nothing to lose but our chains. -Assata Shakur
On May 2 1973, Black Panther activist Assata Shakur, was pulled over by the New Jersey State Police, shot twice and then unjustly charged with murder of a police officer. She was targeted because of her activism and leadership in the BPP and the Black Liberation Army. Assata spent six and a half years in prison under brutal circumstances before escaping out of the maximum security wing of the Clinton Correctional Facility for Women in New Jersey in 1979 and moving to Cuba in exile.
The US government has tried several times to extradite her and went so far as having the FBI list her as a domestic terrorist offering 1 million dollars for her capture in 2005. She continues to write and speak out against institutionalized racism.
